Loose nanofiltration (LNF) is a promising technology for advanced treatment of drinking water, primarily owing to the potentially high rejection of natural organic matter (NOM) and high passage of mineral salts, particularly divalent cations, along with the low operating pressure. This study was devoted to relating the performance with the properties of LNF membranes and obtaining the membrane properties most suitable for drinking water treatment. 

The rejection characteristics for mineral ions by LNF membranes were similar to the relatively dense conventional NF membranes, but with a lower rejection difference among the ions, manifesting less strong co-ion and counter-ion competition effects. The LNF membranes with an MWCO of ∼1000 Da could satisfactorily remove (>80%) disinfection byproduct precursors, with small-sized protein-like and other substances remaining in the permeate water. This study helps to understand the rejection characteristics and mechanisms of LNF membranes, which will benefit the synthesis of high-performance LNF membranes for drinking water treatment and other applications.

Q4: How to select NF?
Firstly, check for the presence of corrosive substances, such as solvents, acids, and bases, in the separation system. If any are found, it is necessary to select special separation membranes. Next, determine the size of the substance to be separated and accordingly choose from the available NF membranes, categorized as LNF (large), MNF (medium), and SNF (small) models.

Q6: What are the precautions when using NF?
1. Before use, pre-treatment is necessary to reduce fouling, scaling, and membrane degradation, thereby enhancing the operational efficiency of NF membrane elements.

2. Before use, the system should be flushed with purified water or product water for approximately 30 minutes.

3. The NF membrane elements are shipped with stored preservative solution, which consists of a sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3) water solution with a concentration of 0.5-1%. The pH value of the preservative solution should be tested every month, and if the pH≤3, the preservative solution should be promptly replaced.

4. Membrane components that are temporarily not in use should be sealed after being filled with a preservative solution. They should be stored in a flat, clean area on the ground, free from corrosive and contaminating substances, and kept away from indoor cold and heat sources. The storage environment temperature should be controlled within the range of 5-40ºC, with the recommended optimal storage temperature being 15-30ºC
